Groundhog Day STEM Project
Materials
Plastic soda bottle
Balloon
Sharpie marker
Vinegar
Baking soda
Funnel
Flashlight
Chip clip
Directions
Set up a space near a wall (you’ll be so aiming the light at your bottle to create shadows, the light is your sun)
Clean and rinse your bottle and remove any labels
Blow up the balloons and clamp the end with a chip clip so the air doesn’t escape. Use your marker to draw a groundhog face on the balloon
Once you’re done decorating your balloons, let it deflate and set it near the bottle
Add 1/4 cup of vinegar to the bottle
Use a funnel to add 1/4 tsp baking soda to the balloon
Carefully slip the balloon over the top of the bottle. Don’t let any of the baking soda fall into the bottle yet
Once you’re ready, flip your balloon and shake it so the baking soda falls into the bottle and triggers the reaction
