Inspiration

Dr. Katherine Esau was a German-American botanist who received the National Medal of Science for her work in understanding the structure and workings of plants. Her early work in plant anatomy focused on the effect of viruses on plants, specifically on plant tissue and development.

Materials

  • Water

  • Ziploc bag

  • Seeds

  • Paper towel

  • Construction paper

  • Tape

  • Scissors

Directions

  1. Cover the seeds with water. Soak them overnight.

  2. Fold the paper towel in half and cut it so that it fits in the Ziploc bag.

  3. Dampen the towel. Gently wring it out so that it’s still damp but not dripping. Place the damp towel inside the bag.

  4. Place a few seeds on the paper towel inside the bag, an inch or two from the bottom.

  5. Lay the bag on a sheet of paper and sketch a house shape around it. Cut out the house shape, then cut out a window for the bag to peek through. Optional: decorate the greenhouse with markers.

  6. Tape the bag and frame to a window, with the seeds facing inside so that you can see them sprout. Keep track of how your seeds grow.
