Melting Snowman Experiment
Materials
Baking soda
White vinegar
Water
Black beads or googly eyes
Orange foam paper
Eyedropper or baster
Glitter and/or sequins (optional)
Directions
Start by slowly adding water to a good load of baking soda. You want to add just enough until you get a crumbly but pack-able dough.
Shape dough into snowballs. Optional - use plastic wrap to help keep the shape.
Gently press two beads or google eyes and an orange triangle nose into the snowball for the snowman’s face.
Freeze for as long as you’d like (the more frozen they are, the longer it will take to defrost).
Melt - place snowman on a tray or dish that will hold liquid
Give kids a bowl of vinegar & baster or eyedropper. Watch the magic happen.
What’s happening?
The chemical reaction that occurs between the baking soda and the vinegar produces a gas called carbon dioxide. This happens when a base (baking soda) and an acid (vinegar) mix. There’s bubbling and fizzing you can hear, see, smell, and touch
