Ready or not - school is coming! We're prepping our virtual desks and hoping everyone stays safe and sane. The tips below are here to help ease the transition and enhance life in our crazy new normal.
Create a Dedicated Work Area. Find a spot in your home with good WiFi and a big enough space for your child to spread out. Younger munchkins might need to be closer to parents for support. Stock supplies in the work area (paper, pencils, etc)
Create a Daily To Do List. Spend 20 minutes at night creating a to-do list for your child for the next day. If possible, add in all school assignments. Make sure to include any chores you’d like done (make your bed, clean your room, etc). Add checkboxes next to each item so kids can check them off as they go throughout the day.
Preview Lessons. Skim through your munchkin’s lesson plan and make sure you understand what’s expected of him/her. Clarify any confusion with your teacher.
Prepare Materials. Print worksheet & handouts ahead of time. Make sure you have all necessary materials (markers, scissors, rulers, etc)
Plan Activities outside of the House. Look for safe “after-school” activities that will get your munchkin moving. Some of our favorites include gymnastics, swim lessons, baseball, soccer and tennis.
Consider Social Learning Opportunities. We all learn better with interaction. Ask your school about an older student who can mentor or tutor your child. Or set up weekly virtual homework clubs.
Build In Reading Time. Try to calendar in 20-30 minutes a day of quiet reading time for your munchkin. Check out our sister site for book recommendations for kids 0-10, organized by age & subject.
